Kathmandu: The annual Kushe Aunsi festival, celebrated on the day of Bhadra Krishna Aunsi, is being observed today by followers of Vedic Sanatan Dharma. On this day, devotees bring the sacred Kush grass into their homes, which is used throughout the year in divine rituals and ancestral rites.

According to tradition, Kush uprooted and worshipped today holds special significance and can be used for the entire year. In contrast, Kush uprooted on other days is considered suitable for use only on the same day, explained Prof. Dr. Ramchandra Gautam, a theologian and former chairman of the Nepal Panchanga Nirnaya Samiti.

Religious Significance of Kush

Kush, along with Tulsi, Peepal, and Shaligram, is regarded as a symbol of Lord Vishnu. Religious texts state that Brahmaji created the sacred Kush along with intelligent beings. Keeping Kush at home is believed to bring prosperity, and it plays a vital role in performing spiritual and ancestral rituals throughout the year.

Honoring Fathers and Ancestors

Kushe Aunsi is also a day of respect and gratitude toward fathers. Traditionally, children honor their fathers by offering their favorite food and sweets. In the absence of a father, devotees perform tarpan, pindadan, and shraddha at holy places in memory of their deceased fathers.

One of the most significant sites for these rituals is the Gokarneshwor Mahadev Temple in northeastern Kathmandu, popularly known as Uttar Gaya. A grand fair takes place in its premises on this occasion. Thousands of devotees gather to offer rituals for their departed fathers. Similar fairs are also held at Betravati, located at the confluence of Rasuwa and Nuwakot rivers.

Spiritual Beliefs and Merits

As per the sacred principle “Pitri Devo Bhava”, offering food and respect to a living father brings happiness and blessings, while performing rituals for deceased fathers grants spiritual merit and family well-being. Scriptures also suggest that even a small act of charity on this day yields thousands of times more spiritual rewards. However, religious texts caution that donations must be given in the proper manner and container, as improper offerings could lead to negative consequences for both giver and receiver.
